UK weather: Will it snow in London?

Snow could fall across the capital today, with urgent ‘yellow’ weather warnings issued this morning for some parts of the city.

The Met Office said snow may be ‘briefly heavy’ in the boroughs of Havering, Redbridge and Greenwich, Bexley and Bromley, in the east and south-east of London.

But don’t get too excited, because the capital is unlikely to turn into a winter wonderland today, with snowfall much more likely to look like sleet.

Meteorologists warned: ‘Heavy rain and snow leading to tricky travel due to surface water and possible slushy accumulations.’

Lewisham and Southwark, and Croydon, south London, were also told to expect snow, with commuters warned of reduced visibility and longer travel times due to spray on the roads.

Two spells of snow were forecast for Croydon this morning, one at 9am and another at 11am, MyLondon reports.

BBC weather predicted four hours of sleet across West London, with showers in Harrow expected between 7am and 10am.

Sleet has also been forecast for Haringey, North London, between 9am and 12pm along with Barnet and Enfield.

Met Office Chief meteorologist Dan Suri told The Mirror: ‘It’ll certainly feel more wintry this week, with colder weather bringing a risk of frost, ice and wintry showers.’

Britain is braced for what could be the coldest night of the year, with temperatures expected to dip to -10C in north west Scotland overnight.

Police had to reassure residents in Edinburgh early this morning after they heard bangs that ‘sounded like bombs going off’.

Authorities said the noise was caused by ‘thundersnow’, created when thunder and lightning combine with heavy snow.
