2.51pm update: Snow charts show Britain could be covered by snow soon
Britain is braced for freezing temperatures forecast to hit as low as -5C in some areas according to the latest forecasts.
Forecasters predict the mercury will plunge to well below freezing from the start of next week, with temperatures plummeting to as low as -5C on Friday, December 4.
Netweather’s snow risk charts show there is a 100 percent risk of snow in parts of Scotland on December 3.
2.32pm update: The Met Office issues a tweet about severe snow
The Met Office tweeted: “#OnThisDay ten years ago, November 25, 2010, the first of two severely cold and #snowy periods of weather began Snowflake
“The following weeks saw widespread #snow across the country.
“This satellite picture is from #Christmas Eve 2010 SnowmanChristmas tree.
“Do you remember this cold and snowy spell?”
1.29pm update: Bookmaker predicts December could be coldest on record.
Bookmaker Ladbrokes has said it is odds on for the coldest December on record.
Temperatures will plummet this week, leading Ladbrokes to make it a 5/4 shot for a White Christmas.
Now it is just 3/1 odds, down from 5/1 odds, that next month goes down as the coldest December ever.
