UK weather forecast: Dense fog and mist covers country as temperatures set to plummet

The UK is set to experience a foggy and murky day on Sunday with occasional sunny spells before the weather gets colder and wetter next week.

Most parts of the UK will wake up to cloudy weather conditions, with frost expected across Scotland after a chilly night.

A band of rain will move from southern parts of the country towards the North East and will later reach Scotland.

The rain is patchy in nature and will be on and off, but there could be some heavy outbursts throughout the afternoon, according to the Met Office.

A forecaster said: “Sunday is going to be a largely cloudy day across the country, but there will be some brighter spells later in the South.”

As the rain moves north, regions in southern England, Wales and Northern Ireland will experience brighter or sunny spells.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell told Mirror Online: “It is going to be another mild day, although not as mild as yesterday, when we reached 19C.

“On Sunday, there will be highs of around 12C in the North of the UK and around 16C in the South.”

Temperatures are slightly above average for November, Mr Snell said.

The forecaster explained: “The average temperatures in the North of the UK should be around 9C or 10C, while in the South they should be around 11C or 12C, so currently they are quite a few degrees above average.”

The highest temperature ever recorded this late in the year was 22.4C on November 1, 2015, in Ceredigion, Wales.

Tonight some rain is expected in the South West, while other parts of the country will stay dry.

Next week will start off with two mild days on Monday and Tuesday before the weather turns unsettled on Wednesday.

Low pressure will be moving in from the Atlantic, meaning heavier bands of rain and stronger winds are expected.

After Wednesday, temperatures are also set to drop as the unsettled weather conditions continue.

      Today

A cloudy and dull day across most of the UK with fog persisting for parts of east and northeast England. Some rain in the west, heavy in places, gradually moving northeastwards. The best of the brightness in northern Scotland.

      Tonight

Rain over northern and eastern parts gradually clearing northwards. Remaining cloudy with mist and fog over eastern England in particular. Some showers for the southwest and Northern Ireland.

      Monday

Mist and fog gradually lifting, though perhaps persisting over northeast England. Showers in the west and the south, heavy at times. Best of the brightness in northern Scotland.

      Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday

Cloudy with patchy rain on Tuesday. Windier with rain at times on Wednesday and Thursday. Remaining mild.
