UK weather: Flood alerts issued as rain, thunder and fog hits Britain

Brits could be facing the wettest September on record as the nation is to be battered with heavy rain along with fog patches.

Flood alerts have been issued by the Met Office as a result of heavy rainfall in parts of England.

River levels are also to rise as a result of the heavy rainfall in the rivers Duddon, Crake and Mill Beck in the north west of England.

Today forecasters warn of a band of cloud and occasional rain and drizzle across central parts continuing southeast.

This is to reach Kent towards the evening.

However there will be sunny spells elsewhere with showers, especially in the northwest.

As a whole it will remain windy, particularly in north.

The Met Office has said its main area of concern is the Ulverston area.

Flooding will be possible in the areas affected and people have been warned to avoid using low lying footpaths near local water channels.

But parts of the south and north east will see the best of the sunshine with more widespread temperatures of 21C.

Such is the spike in temperatures predicted for this week, fellow forecaster WXCharts is showing the mercury rise 6C above what is usually expected for this time of year.

The reason for these higher temperatures is due to an Atlantic front hitting the country this week, reports Express.

As the Met Office stated: “Today will be mostly fine and dry elsewhere with broken cloud and some sunny spells.

“Feeling warm in sunshine after a chilly start.

“Tonight it will be dry elsewhere other than the northwest with variable cloud and clear spells.

“It will turn chilly in places with a few fog patches.”

Met Office forecaster Becky Mitchell said the week will be a “mixed bag of dry spells and showers”.

As the week comes to an end, rain downpours will continue with some outbreaks of nicer weather in parts of the country.

Temperature will be in the high teens or the low twenties on Friday.
