Parts of Britain are set to be battered by 75mph winds today as it braces for another wet day.

Forecasters have issued 18 flood alerts across England due to heavy downpours.

The North West will experience the strongest gales, according to the Met Office.

Two yellow weather warnings are in place across Britain today, for rain and for wind.

The rain alert covers most of Wales and northwest England, while the wind warning covers northeast Scotland.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said he expects flooding could happen “almost anywhere” as the nation is set for a soaking.

Sunday morning will see clear skies after early rain clears.

But scattered showers are expected to drench the country later, MirrorOnline reports.

Some of this will turn heavy in parts of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, while Scotland will see heavy showers later in the day.

The south is expected to have mild temperatures and a smaller amount of rain.

But heavy rain and gales are due for many southern and central areas on Sunday night.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Storm Aiden will have cleared away, but we will see another area of low pressure bringing further wet and windy weather.

“The wind will be particularly strong in the North West, especially for western Scotland, where we can see gusts of 70mph to 75mph.”

They went on: “The rain will spread in later in the afternoon again to western areas and it can be heavy and persistent.”

The downpours will also pose a risk of flooding around western hills.

Forecasters say “fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life” for areas affected by the yellow rain warning.

The Met Office warned: “Delays or cancellations to train and bus services are possible.

“Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

“Some communities may be cut off by flooded roads.”

After a chaotic few rain-sodden days, the weather looks like it will become more settled next week.

The Met Office said “it could be a bit drier and a bit colder” and rain will clear away on Monday.

Mr Patagna said: “On Sunday we are seeing more rain to come from the South West, again affecting the whole of the UK.

“This is gradually quietening down coming into next week when we will see a big change towards more settled weather.”
