A further 1,025 have died in UK hospitals.

A total of 807 deaths were recorded in England, 54 in Wales, 61 in Scotland and 103 in Northern Ireland for the week ending January 8.

The figures comes ahead of Boris Johnson’s press conference later today at 5pm.

Mr Johnson’s third update of the week comes as the UK government comes under increasing pressure about people entering the UK from abroad.

He will be joined by the Chief Scientific Advisor – Partick Vallance – and Chief Medical Officer, Chris Whitty.

It comes as it was confirmed that one of two Brazilian coronavirus variants was detected in the UK ahead of ministers banning the arrival of travellers from South America to limit the spread of a concerning new strain.

Professor Wendy Barclay, who is advising the Government’s Covid-19 response, said the variant may have been “introduced some time ago” but it was unclear whether it was the highly-infectious strain that prompted the ban.

Her comments came after Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said he was “not aware” of any cases of the strain that led him to impose the restrictions, which also covers Portugal due to its strong links with Brazil.

The restrictions came into force at 4am on Friday in response to concerns of a Brazilian variant that shares with the new South African strain mutations that are associated with a rapid increase in cases in areas where there have already been large outbreaks of the disease.

Despite today alarming figures, Covid-19 rates have fallen across all age groups apart from the over-80s in a sign lockdown measures are starting to have an effect.

The Public Health England data show case rates among the over 80s, who account for the most coronavirus related hospital admissions, are continuing to rise, and are now above 300 per 100,000.

But every other age group saw rates fall.

It also showed that although London continues to have the highest rate of any region, its rate of new cases stood at 864.9 per 100,000 people in the seven days to January 10, down from 1,043.9 in the previous week.

There was a similar pattern in other areas, with the East Midlands, eastern England, north east England, south east England and Yorkshire & the Humber all recording a week-on-week fall.

The rate increased in north west England, south west England and the West Midlands.
