More countries could be added to the UK travel quarantine list when it is updated this week.
There will still be some opportunities for a late getaway but it is likely that more destinations will be included in the summary of nations where passengers returning to the UK face 14 days isolation.
Countries at risk include Sweden, which has seen its seven-day infection rate climb by more than 50 per cent in the past week, and Poland, which is close to the crunch 20 cases per 100,000 population level at 18.61.
Italy, Greece and Turkey are also closing in on the key number and in some cases have surpassed it.
Sweden currently remains on the UK safe travel list despite a large spike in cases over the last week.
Latest figures show a 26.38 rate per 100,000, but the majority of these new cases are thought to be centred on capital Stockholm.
Poland is closing in on the red danger zone of the UK’s traffic light system. Cases currently number 18.61 per 100,000 and rising, so it is possible the country will soon lose its safe travel status.
Tourists from the UK can still head to Italy (including Vatican City and San Marino) but infections are rising.
The current infection rate is 18.7 but there has been a surge in cases and new local restrictions have been introduced including an instruction that face coverings are now compulsory – even outdoors.
Demand for holidays in Turkey has risen significantly because it is one of the new sunshine destinations still quarantine-free for UK holidaymakers. It is in the green safe zone for travel with an infection rate of 14.15.
However, Turkey registered 23,335 cases of Covid-19 in the last two weeks, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
The Turkish government has imposed curfews that are time-limited, or aimed at particular age groups. These can be imposed at short notice.
These are the destinations currently quarantine-free:
Antigua and Barbuda
Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba
British Antarctic Territory
British Virgin Islands
Greece – except:
Isle of Man
Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno Islands
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha
