THE Yes movement have paid tribute to an independence activist who died after a decade-long battle with cancer.

Independence supporters from all over the country posted tweets and Facebook messages after Craig Munro’s death was announced yesterday.

Nicola Sturgeon said Munro was “clever, lots of fun [and] loyal” while his son, Sam Goddard Munro, said his father had an “unyielding commitment to an independent Scotland”.

He posted on Facebook: “My father unfortunately lost his decade long battle with cancer. I can’t begin to explain how valiant, courageous and unwavering he has been throughout. Admirable doesn’t scratch the surface.

“Those of you who knew him, of which there are too many to count, know the strength of character he possessed. His unyielding commitment to an independent Scotland, a place he hopes can become a beacon of hope for the world around to people of all shapes, sizes, colours and paths that seek to better the planet they inhabit. I know that fire burns on even now.”

Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: “I’m so very, very sad to hear this news. I’ve been proud to call Craig a friend for more than 30 years. He was clever, lots of fun, loyal and so committed to @theSNP  and independence. His loss is huge and we will all miss him so much. Rest in peace, pal.”

Fellow Yes activist Roza Salih, who was celebrated for her campaigning work as one of the “Glasgow Girls”, said: “I am heartbroken today to find out that my good friend Craig Munro is no longer with us. He was genuinely the nicest man that light up the room with his humour and love.”

The Glasgow Kelvin constituency branch of the SNP said: “Kelvin branch members are saddened by the news that our dear friend, long-time supporter of Scottish independence, Craig Munro, passed away last night. The one and only @Fankledoose  – quiz master like no other, lover of life and very cheeky so and so. We will miss him.”

SNP MP Patrick Grady described Munro as “a true local character”, adding: “More sad news today… Craig was well kent all around Partick and the West End, a true local character, and he was known and loved across @theSNP, quiz master, campaigner, patter merchant extraordinaire, and gone too soon…”
