King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain enjoyed a family day out to Somao today as part of the Princess of Asturias Awards.

The royal family explored the pretty parish in Pravia, which was honoured with the 2020 Best Asturian Village prize.

Having all embraced a smart casual vibe for the appearance, the foursome also wore protective face coverings for their tour.

Queen Letizia, 48, recycled an off-white Burberry trench coat which she previously wore in 2018, wearing it open over the top of a black crew neck sweater, grey check trousers and black flats.

The young princesses, who clearly take after their stylish mother, looked trendy in oversized coats, with Leonor, 14, opting for a chic grey houndstooth blazer with black trousers and white trainers.

Her sister Sofia, 13, sported a cosy long padded green gilet over a white turtleneck jumper and completed her outfit with wide leg khaki trousers and white sneakers.

All three women opted to wear their hair in high ponytails, while Letizia opted for natural make-up with a hint of brown eyeshadow and mascara.

Meanwhile King Felipe dressed up his brown check blazer and blue shirt with a floral patterned tie in shades of pink and maroon.

The occasion saw Princess Leonor deliver her second speech of the week, in which she praised the town for its natural beauty and preservation of its history.

She also thanked the local people for their warm welcome as she presented the award to the Somao authorities.

The inhabitants of the region received an Exemplary People award for their dedication to maintaining ‘the wealth of their Indian and rural heritage legacy through close ties of neighborhood collaboration, in a convinced and exemplary commitment to the union of tradition and modernity’.

The Princess of Asturias Awards are a series of annual prizes awarded in Spain by the Princess of Asturias Foundation – previously the Prince of Asturias Foundation.

Sharing its name with Leonor, who is heir to the Spanish throne and holds the title of Princess of Asturias, the annual awards are presented to individuals or organisations who make notable achievements in the sciences, humanities, and public affairs.

Each recipient present at the ceremony receives a diploma, a sculpture expressly created for the awards by Spanish sculptor Joan Miró, and a pin with the emblem of the Foundation.

There is also a monetary prize of 50,000 euros for each category, this amount is shared if the category has more that one recipient.

The decision to go ahead with the awards amid the coronavirus pandemic with protective measures in place – one of which involved moving it from its usual venue, the Campoamor Theater, which has capacity for 1,400 guests – to the smaller location, and limiting audience numbers.

Last night the Spanish royals met with the victors in Oviedo, in the Principality of Asturias.
