Priyanka Chopra Jonas apologised for promoting skin-lightening cream.
At the time, the actress was branded a hypocrite for calling out racism in the Black Lives Matter movement after she had advertised skin-lightening creams with Ponds and Garnier.
Now the Miss World 2000 pageant, 38, gave fans a “sincere” apology for promoting the products as she “can’t go back and change” what she did.
Priyanka referred to the adverts as a “misstep” in her high-flying career in her new book Unfinished.
She wrote: “I can’t go back and change what I did, but I can apologise, and I do so sincerely.”
In the Ponds advert, Priyanka loses her man as a dark-skinned woman to a love rival who has lighter skin.
The advert concluded with the star winning back the heart of her lost love after using the cream to lighten her skin.
Admittedly the Bollywood-turned-Hollywood star said she initially felt “sad” when she first saw the advert.
“I felt sad, actually. I saw myself through my 13-year-old eyes when I was making concoctions in my bathroom trying to lighten my skin tone,” she told The Guardian.
Priyanka come under fire when she showed her support for the Black Lives Matter movement because of the skin-lightening cream advertising she had done.
” @priyankachopra quit being a hypocrite. Don’t you sell skin lightening creams? Shame on you.”
“So I saw a snap story about how ppl are attacking priyanka for supporting BLM but that she’s a hypocrite since in India she supported and was in an ad for Garnier “skin lightening cream”… this is not hypocrital whatsoever???” (sic)
In a re-surfaced interview from last year, Priyanka said she doesn’t endorse the only way to be beautiful is to become fair.
In fact, the beauty queen insisted she was “very proud to be dusky”.
She said at the time: “I am very proud to be dusky myself.
“I would never go round saying you need to become fair and that’s the only way you’ll be beautiful, because I don’t endorse that.”
Priyanka cemented her status as an actress and she’s become one of India’s highest-paid stars.
In her personal life, she’s married to American singer Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers.
They were engaged and married in 2018.
Their marriage was an extravagant three-day wedding in Mumbai.
Admittedly Priyanka said it was a shock when Nick proposed after around eight weeks of dating.
She told Elle magazine: “I didn’t expect the proposal at that point… It was two months!
“I thought it would happen, but it was still a complete shock. [But] I relinquished control and I just went with it.”
