Eugenie has named her and Jack Brooksbank’s newborn son August Philip Hawke Brooksbank – with the middle name Philip in honour of his great-grandfather the Duke of Edinburgh, who is currently in hospital. Royal author Phil Dampier described it as a “lovely gesture”, adding that it makes Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure “so much sadder”.
Mr Dampier accused the Duke of Sussex of a “lack of respect” towards Philip, 99, and the Queen, 94, over Megxit.
The royal expert told the Sun: “It’s a lovely gesture by Eugenie and Jack to give their son Philip as a middle name and it’s obviously a tribute to Prince Philip who is in hospital.
“Philip has been the patriarchal figure of the Royal Family for all these decades and all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren adore him.
“It’s what makes Harry and Meghan’s departure so much sadder.
“Harry was always inspired by his grandfather but his behaviour towards him and the Queen in recent months shows a lack of respect.”
Mr Dampier added: “Naming a child after a senior royal shows a warmth and affection that sadly has been lacking in the missives Harry and Meghan have released recently.”
Philip was admitted to King Edward VII’s hospital in London on Tuesday evening as a precautionary measure after feeling unwell.
It was announced on Friday that Harry, 36, and Meghan, 39, will not be returning to royal duties.
“The honorary military appointments and royal patronages held by the Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of the Royal Family.
“While all are saddened by their decision, the Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family.”
In a statement, a spokesperson for Meghan and Harry insisted “we can all live a life of service” and “service is universal” – in what has been criticised as a bitter swipe at the royals.
The Sussexes, who are expecting their second child, quit royal duties in March 2020.
A 12-month review period was agreed in case they wanted to return to the royal fold.
But they are pursuing new careers outside of the Royal Family which include lucrative deals with Netflix and Spotify, and the couple are giving a televised interview to US chat show host Oprah Winfrey which airs next month.
Eugenie and Jack today announced their tot’s name as they released sweet snaps.
The royal revealed that the child had been named after his great-great-great-great-great-grandfather Prince Albert, who had Augustus as a middle name. Albert was Queen Victoria’s consort. It is understood Hawke is a Brooksbank family name.
