The move comes after incidents were reported in Glengormley’s Lilian Bland Park and the War Memorial Park in Ballyclare.
A resident contacted the Times this week to voice concerns about anti-social behaviour in Glengormley.
The man, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed: “There are crowds of children aged from around seven-15 gathering at Lilian Bland Park in the evenings. This is deterring people from going into the park.
“Adults are being verbally abused by the teens.”
Commenting on the issue, Chief Inspector David Moore said: “We are fully aware of the ongoing issues of anti-social behaviour in places including the Lilian Bland Pavilion and the War Memorial Park in Ballyclare alongside people gathering around shopfronts in these areas as well.
“Often this will entail youths drinking alcohol, gathering in groups and verbally abusing people going about their business and on many occasions in recent times letting off fireworks and bangers. In the run-up to Halloween I want to specifically address this issue.
“It’s important to remember fireworks are made from explosive material and, if misused, can cause serious and life changing injuries.
“The law clearly states that fireworks – except indoor fireworks and sparklers – must be bought from reputable, licensed dealers who are required to keep sales records.
“Fireworks bought from other sources may not be British Standard approved thus presenting an even bigger risk of injury. It is also illegal to possess, sell, handle or use fireworks if you do not have a licence. And you can be fined up to £5,000 for breaking the law. If you are aware of anywhere that is selling illegal fireworks I would urge you to contact us on 101 to report this as not only are they profiteering from this illegal activity but also putting people in our community at risk by selling such goods.”
Chief Inspector Moore added: “Officers are working in partnership with local community representatives and agencies to address these ongoing issues.
“We will be stepping up patrols in these areas and anywhere else in the District where ASB is an issue.
“I’m appealing to young people to think about the effect of their actions and indeed the impact of getting a criminal conviction, which could damage opportunities to travel, study or get the job they want.
“We would continue to appeal to parents and guardians to speak with young people to know where they are going and who they are with. Young people must understand the dangers of getting involved in behaviour which could result in injuring themselves, others or ultimately gaining a criminal record.”
