      The Covid-19 pandemic has taken its toll on the economy and finding work in the current climate is proving a difficult task.

      In the three months to November 2020, the rate of unemployment in the UK was estimated at 5.0%, while redundancies were at record levels in the same period.

      As a result, those applying for jobs during the pandemic may feel like opportunities are few and far between.

      However, there are many roles currently available within the Civil Service in Peterborough, working for government agencies, departments and institutions.

      Work Coach at the Department of Work and Pensions

      This role at the DWP has the aim of helping people and their families work towards financial independence.

      Those in this job should help claimants of Universal Credit, Jobseekers Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance & Income Support to get the support they need.

      The job description reads: “The Work Coach role is wide-ranging and diverse.

      “You will be working with customers, employers and colleagues through a combination of digital, telephone and face to face contacts on a daily basis.”

      The responsibilities include:

      • Providing support to Universal Credit, Jobseekers Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance & Income Support “customers”.

      • Offering quality advice to customers about job search actions, supporting them to job search effectively in a largely digital world.

      • Building positive relationships with customers that encourages, motivates and builds trust.

      • Developing an in-depth knowledge of local employment opportunities, recognising the roles that our Partners and Employers have in helping our customers secure employment.

      • Making timely decisions, based on customer needs, and referring them to appropriate help and support.

      Salary: £27,565

      Marine Data Specialist at Joint Nature Conservation Committee

      The Joint Nature Conservation Committee is the public body that advises the UK Government and devolved administrations on UK-wide and international nature conservation.

      They are looking for a Marine Data Specialist to join the Marine Monitoring and Evidence team, based in Peterborough.

      According to the job listing: “You will work collaboratively with members of your own team, and other teams within JNCC to develop map products and deliver robust evidence and advice to support JNCC’s conservation work.”

      Additionally, “you will work with international partners as well as colleagues in the country nature conservation bodies (Scottish Natural Heritage, Natural England, Natural Resources Wales, Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Northern Ireland) and other public bodies (e.g. Cefas, Environment Agency).”

      The ideal candidate would be: “a data specialist, with experience of manipulating large spatial environmental datasets, and managing them appropriately using GIS and databases.

      “Experience working with marine data will be an advantage. You will have programming skills, with experience of applying these to automate spatial processing and data management tasks.”

      Salary: £27,946

      Driving Examiner – Zone C at Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency

      The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency’s (DVSA) role is to ensure that everyone stays safe on Britain’s roads.

      The description for this role reads: “This is a fantastic opportunity to join our team and make a real difference to road safety.

      “As a driving examiner you’ll be on the frontline of road safety in Great Britain

      “You’ll meet people from all backgrounds, while being an important part of a tight-knit, diverse team of professionals, all focussed on helping people start a lifetime of safe driving.

      “Using your people skills, and great customer service, to meet and greet candidates and instructors.

      “You’ll get to see the smiles and celebrations when you confirm a pass. But needing a clear, calm manner to explain your decisions and deliver the test result.”

      The responsibilities and duties of the role are: “Working within your chosen cluster, you’ll be responsible for carrying out car driving tests.

      “During each test, you need to build rapport with the test candidate, be professional and tailor your approach to take into account any needs they may have.

      “You’ll control and assess the level of driving displayed by the candidate to ensure they reach the required standard and accurately complete document test reports.

      “When you’re not carrying out tests, you’ll support the Local Driving Test Manager and your colleagues to maintain an effective working environment.”

      Technical Delivery Officer (Local Authority) at HM Land Registry

      A non-ministerial department, HM Land Registry registers the ownership of land and property in England and Wales.

      In this role, you would: “work closely with local authorities from a technical perspective, to ensure the smooth migration of the Local Land Charges (LLCs) service from local authorities to HM Land Registry’s digital register.

      “You will be attending meetings with local authorities as well as local authority and customer events and conferences, to promote the Local Land Charges service and discuss integration options.

      “You will also provide technical advice, guidance and assistance during migration, working closely with Delivery Managers within the Local Land Charges Programme and incumbent suppliers.”

      The job holder will have the following skills and responsibilities:

      • extensive knowledge of both local authority processes and IT systems

      • experience working in a local authority or Local Land Charges environment.

      • experience in organising your own and other’s activity with flexibility to meet conflicting priorities.
