ondoners are tightening the squeeze on Covid-19 with cases falling by at least a quarter in 26 boroughs, official figures reveal today.

However, a further 228 Covid deaths, within 28 days of people testing positive, were announced for the capital on Wednesday, taking the total so far to 12,905.

Hospitals in the city remain under huge pressure, though, the number of coronavirus patients has decreased.

But hopes of bringing the virus to bay in London are rising as the figures show a fall of 19,260 confirmed cases in the week to January 22.

There were also 4,076 new cases announced on Wednesday, after two days below 4,000, compared to figures around three times as high some days earlier this month.

The disease is more on the retreat in east London than parts of the west of the city.

Islington saw the biggest drop of 40.7 per cent, followed by Tower Hamlets 40.2 per cent, Southwark 38.3 per cent, Lambeth 36.5 per cent, Enfield 36.3 per cent, and Kensington and Chelsea 35.5 per cent.

Hackney and the City of London had a drop of 35.3 per cent, Newham 34.7 per cent, Havering 34.1 per cent, Wandsworth 34.1 per cent, Croydon 32.9 per cent, Lewisham 32.7 per cent, and Barking and Dagenham 32.5 per cent.

The four smallest declines are all in west London, with Kingston down 14.8 per cent, Hillingdon 20.5 per cent, Harrow 20.8 per cent, and Ealing 22.8 per cent.

Despite the fall in confirmed cases, the overall disease levels in London are still high, with experts expecting the epidemic to be harder to drive down than in the first wave given the new variant which spreads more quickly:

      – Twenty-five boroughs still had a seven-day rate of more than 400 new infections in the week to January 22.

      – The highest rate was Ealing at 705.4, with 2,411 cases in the week, followed by Brent 2,239 cases, Newham 2,174, Croydon 2,134 and Barnet 2,069.

      Related

      – The seven-day rate for the capital has fallen to 495 in the week to January 22, down from a peak of 1,118.4 on January 4.

      – A further 43,555 first dose vaccinations were announced yesterday to have been administered in the city, taking the total so far to 690,726.

      The full figures show in Islington there were 803 cases in the week to January 22, down 552 (40.7%) with a seven-day rate of 331.2, Tower Hamlets 1492 cases, down 1,001 (40.2%) rate 459.4, Southwark 1343 cases, down 835 (38.3%) rate 421.2, Lambeth 1511 cases, down 868 (36.5%) rate 463.4, Enfield 1643 cases, down 938 (36.3%) rate 492.2, Kensington and Chelsea 477 cases, down 263 (35.5%) rate 305.5, Hackney and City of London 1289 cases, down 702 (35.3%) rate 443.2, Newham 2174 cases, down 1,156 (34.7%) rate 615.6, Havering 1170 cases, down 605 (34.1%) rate 450.8, Wandsworth 1226 cases, down 635 (34.1%) rate 371.9, and Croydon 2134 cases, down 1,044 (32.9%) rate 551.8.
