The Duchess of Cambridge honoured the strength and bravery of Holocaust survivors Manfred Goldberg and Zigi Shipper, as she took part in a video conversation with them to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on Wednesday (27 January).
Kate and husband Prince William had previously met both men at Stutthof in 2017. Reminiscing about their previous meet-up, the duchess told Manfred and Zigi: “It’s lovely to see you again.”
In a light-hearted moment from their discussion, which has been shared on the official @KensingtonRoyal Instagram account, Zigi joked that he had been especially excited about speaking to Kate again.

“I was so happy you know,” he said. “I didn’t need your husband, you were the one I wanted.” A laughing Kate replied: “Zigi, I’ll tell him you miss him very much.”
During the conversation, the duchess once again heard about the experiences of both men, who first met in the camps in 1944.
Alongside other Holocaust survivors, Manfred and Zigi frequently share their experiences with young people around the UK through the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Outreach Programme in order to help teach younger generations about the Holocaust.

After they had shared their stories with her, Kate thanked them, calling them an inspiration.
“The stories that you have both shared with me again today and your dedication in educating the next generation, the younger generation, about your experiences and the horrors of the Holocaust shows extreme strength and such bravery in doing so,” she said.

The Duchess of Cambridge also spoke with two youth ambassadors from the Holocaust Educational Trust, Farah Ali and Maxwell Horner, discussing the impact of visiting the camps and hearing about the experiences of survivors. The royal also heard more about the work they carry out to continue educating their peers about the Holocaust.
