Tesco Clubcard holders have been issued a warning by Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis.

According to the finance journalist, changes are being made in January which are set to affect over 16.5million shoppers.

In the latest edition of the weekly MoneySavingExpert.com newsletter, the consumer champion wrote: “A mixture of a scheduled revamp to the Clubcard system and the effects of the recent lockdown mean you need to be aware of major changes to how you can use your points.”

Tesco vouchers can be exchanged for codes to spend with Clubcard Reward Partners on jewellery, travel, food, days out and more reports the Daily Record.

Shoppers can easily convert points to Tesco Clubcard vouchers to use in stores or online – typically 500 points collected are usually worth £5, but if you spend them the right way, those 500 points could be worth £15.

But two of Clubcard’s reward partnerships are ending this month, so if you’re planning to redeem your vouchers for these, Martin advises “you should do so sooner rather than later.”

Here are the changes to Tesco Clubcard Rewards in January.

Now TV – ends Sunday, January 31

At present, Tesco customers can spend their points on Now TV credit, including a third off streaming subscriptions. The partnership between Now TV and Tesco Clubcard is due to end at the end of this month.

MoneySavingExpert.com explains that “as long as you’ve swapped your points online at the Clubcard website by 11.59pm on Sunday 31 January, you’ll be able to use this reward, even if it takes longer to credit you.”

While a few rewards can be redeemed and enjoyed right now, many others aren’t usable due to lockdown restrictions – including restaurant vouchers and days out.

MoneySavingExpert also clarified how Clubcard points are valid for two years, but when you swap them for a voucher, it has an expiry of 12 months, usually six but Tesco has extended them, so as long as your points aren’t coming to the end of their validity, it is still best to wait as long as possible if you want to swap them for a reward that’s currently unusable.
