Wales’ technical advisory group is considering whether children should wear facemasks in school, after the Scottish Government announced it will bring the rule in next week, Health Minister Vaughan Gething has said.

It comes as the World Health Organisation (WHO), amended their guidance to say children aged 12 and over should wear masks.

Mr Gething said: “Our technical advisory group is revisiting the evidence and will provide us with further advice later today.”

He said it was important to take decisions that are “proportionate” that the Government must “consider the balance of harm” especially with children and young people with additional needs.

The briefing follows the outcome of the Welsh Government’s 21-day coronavirus review on August 21 when First Minister Mark Drakeford announced further easements to restrictions in Wales.

However, he warned he would not hesitate to reverse existing easements if necessary to ensure schools are safe to reopen to pupils on September 1.

“Schools will be our top priority other than, of course, hospitals and places where people are looked after,” he said.

The easements included permission for the number of households who can come together to form a single extended household to double from two to four from August 22.

Weddings and funerals were also given the go ahead to include a meal for up to 30 people, in suitably socially distant settings.

Further changes being introduced this week include the reopening of casinos and the permission for care homes to organise visits indoors.
