I’M A Celebrity stars could have an unexpected “campmate” with them inside the Welsh castle after a woman claimed she captured a “ghostly figure” through the window.
Toria Westwood says she got more than she bargained for while visiting Gwrych Castle in Abergele where the new series is set to be filmed this month.
The 200-year-old eerie castle is said to be haunted by the spirit of Winifred Cochrane the Countess of Dundonald – and Toria’s six-year-old daughter might have caught a glimpse of her.
Little Eleanor told her mum she’d seen something spooky looking out from the upper window of the castle as they visited the ruins in January 2019.
Toria said: “We love the castle – even though it is spooky – and my daughter is convinced she saw something.
“We were on the terrace taking pictures of the view and my daughter shouted ‘mum look up there’.
“I quickly took a picture of where she was pointing.
“She said she saw a lady – and I can see her on the picture too.”
The Countess of Dundonald lived at Gwrych Castle in the 19th and early 20th century – and believers in the supernatural say her spirit haunts the ruins.
The Woman in White, as the locals know her as, is said to be angry that her husband stripped the castle of her valuables and sold them.
Gwrych Castle became known as “The Showpiece of Wales” and over the years has attracted many visitors.
It was built between 1810 and 1825 by Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh.
The castle played an important tole in World War II, as the Government used it to house 200 Jewish refugees.
It also served as the training grounds for English World Middleweight boxing champion Randolph Turpin in the early 1950s.
But ghostly goings-on a the castle isn’t the only worry for celebrities taking part in the new series.
The Sun revealed this week bosses are having to beef up the contestants basic food rations so their bodies can cope with the freezing cold temperatures of North Wales.
The ITV show is normally filmed in the Australian jungle, but coronavirus travel restrictions forced a change of location.
Celebrities including EastEnders actress Jessica Plummer, 28, TV host Vernon Kay, 46, Olympian Sir Mo Farah, 37, and soap star Shane Richie, 56, are set to star in the revamped show.
