The Duke of Gloucester is the youngest grandchild of King George V and Queen Mary, meaning he is the Queen’s youngest paternal cousin. He practised as an architect until 1974 when he began his life working within the Royal Family. But why was Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, unable to become an architect as he wanted?
Who is Prince Richard?
Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, 76, is the Queen’s cousin.
His father was Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, who was the younger brother of the Queen’s father King George VI.
The current Duke of Gloucester is the youngest son of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester and Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, was born in 1944.
At the time of his birth, he was fifth in the line of succession to the throne and second in line to his father’s dukedom.
However, he is 27th in the line of succession behind Princess Margaret’s grandson Arthur Chatto.
The Duke of Gloucester will move to 28th in the line of succession once Princess Eugenie gives birth to her child in early 2021.
He is the most senior male-line descendant of Queen Victoria and her husband Albert, Prince Consort.
As the youngest child of the couple, Richard was never intended to assume his father’s title after his death.
Prince Richard intended to become a full-time architect.
However, the Duke of Gloucester’s elder brother Prince William died in 1972, aged 30, in an air crash while he was piloting his plane in a competition.
William was heir apparent for his father’s peerages, Duke of Gloucester, Earl of Ulster and Baron Culloden in 1974.
But he died two years before his father so his younger brother took on these titles.
After his brother’s death, Richard began taking on more responsibilities related to his future dukedom.
As heir apparent to his father’s dukedom, he had to take on additional family obligations and royal duties.
He resigned his architectural partnership and began representing Queen Elizabeth II on royal duties.
Prince Richard’s father died in 1974 meaning he succeeded to his father’s titles then.
The Duke of Gloucester holds a number of important positions and is associated with more than 150 charities and organisations.
Prince Richard maintains his interests in architecture and conservation, despite working within the Royal Family.
He is an elected corporate member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and President of the Scottish Society of Architect-Artist.
His fellowships include those of the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.
