Wales has implemented a travel ban on people who live in UK Covid-19 hotspots.

The ban, which came into effect on Friday, covers England’s tier two and three areas, the Scottish central belt, and all of Northern Ireland.

First Minister Mark Drakeford announced the rules on Wednesday after asking Boris Johnson twice to ban people from English hotspots from travelling to Wales.

Many Brits are worried about how this new border ban will impact their work. Here’s all you need to know.

Can I travel to Wales for work?

Yes, you are permitted to travel to Wales for work, even if you live in a UK coronavirus hotspot.

However, if you can work from home, then that is advised you do so.

People living in tier one in England and in an area in Scotland without extra restrictions can still travel to areas of Wales which are not under local lockdowns.

The travel regulations are subject to a formal review every 28 days.

What are the other Wales travel ban exceptions?

There are a few other exemptions from the Wales travel rules, which are deemed as ‘reasonable excuses’.

The reasonable excuses are the same as the ones given to citizens living in lockdown areas of Wales, who are not allowed to leave their area.

The reasonable excuses are as follows:

      • Getting food, medical or essential supplies for those in the same household or vulnerable people – this includes for animals
      • Provide voluntary or charitable services if this cannot be done from outside the area
      • Elite athletes can train and compete
      • To provide or receive emergency assistance
      • To attend a wedding or civil partnership (as a guest or as part of the wedding party) or a funeral
      • To attend court
      • Children to play sport, music or for other recreational activities – or to continue existing contact arrangements between parents who do not live together
      • To avoid injury or illness or escape a risk of harm

The details of the exemptions can be found on the Welsh Government website.

What is the fine for breaking the travel restrictions?

The Welsh Government said police will issue a fine of £60 to those caught breaking the travel rules, which will be halved if paid within 14 days.

Fines will then be doubled for each offence, up to a limit of £1,920.
