Ticket information for the British and Irish Lions’ 2021 tour of South Africa have been confirmed.
The ballot is now open for next summer’s trip and the Lions have released details of their official packages.
Former Wales boss Warren Gatland will coach the tourists for the third consecutive time as he bids to avenge the Test series defeat in 2009, when he was part of the coaching staff.
Despite the uncertainty brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, the tour will kick of as planned on July 3 with the Lions taking on the Stormers.
They will then face a South Africa invitational side, the Sharks, South Africa ‘A’ and the Bulls before the first Test in Johannesburg on July 24, with the second and third Test matches following on consecutive weekends.
Let’s talk about tickets…
HOW DO I BUY TEST MATCH TICKETS ONLY?
One way to guarantee yourself a ticket is by purchasing one of the Lions’ ticket inclusive tour packages, but more about them later.
If you are only interested in purchasing a ticket for a Test match, and arranging your own travel, you can enter the ballot, which closes at 5pm on September 16.
Entering the ballot does not guarantee you a ticket but if you are successful, you win the opportunity to purchase a ticket.
Each applicant can apply to buy two tickets per Test match.
If you are successful in the ballot, you will receive an email no later than October 16.
Fans based inside Britain and Ireland or the European Union can enter the ballot for Test match tickets here.
HOW MUCH ARE TEST MATCH TICKETS?
As is regularly the case these days, you have a few different options.
Category A tickets – £161
Category B tickets – £107
Category C tickets – £67
Accessible / Wheelchair users – £67
All tickets will incur a handling and postage fee of £12.56.
WHAT ABOUT THE TOUR PACKAGES?
The official Lions tour packages appear to cater for most needs and are hugely customisable, as well as guaranteeing you a ticket to the matches.
You can do the full trip, take in all the games, have all your flights and accommodation sorted for you or you can simply have flights and a match ticket, leaving the rest up to you.
The top level package, with all the flights, hotels, tickets for all the games, sightseeing and other exclusive events included will cost £15,595 per person.
From there, the prices are reduced depending on what elements of the package you want to lose.
You can travel for just the Test series, two Tests or just the one. You can also just travel out for the provincial matches that come before the Test series.
Full details of all the packages can be found here.
CAN I GET A TICKET ONLY FOR THE PROVINCIAL GAMES?
The ballot for UK, Ireland and EU residents doesn’t currently offer the option to apply for tickets for the provincial games.
There is however, an ‘accommodation and ticket’ package for individual provincial matches that provide you with a ticket and somewhere to stay.
For the Stormers game, for example, this costs £645 per person.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE TOUR IS CANCELLED DUE TO CORONAVIRUS
The Lions say that full refunds for tickets and package tours would be offered if the tour is cancelled or postponed before the departure date because of Covid-19.
If that happens, fans will be offered a full refund of the option to move their package to the new dates of the tour free of charge but only if they book with Lions Rugby Travel.
