Plans for a number of huge new 5G masts in Cardiff have been revealed.

Developers have submitted plans for new antenna masts right across the city, with some standing 20m tall.

The masts are proposed by companies working on behalf of mobile phone networks to help to expand and improve their networks.

Dozens have been built across the city in recent years, with a number of residents objecting to the plans.

This is where the latest masts are set to be built:

      Lisvane Road, Lisvane

A 20m tower with six antennas.

      Llanederyn Shopping Centre, Maelfa, Llanedeyrn

Replacement of nine existing antennas with 18 new antennas on three 2.5m poles.

      Footway off Llandaff Road, Pontcanna

A 20m tower with three antennas.

Land adjacent to rear of Douglas Close, Danescourt Way

A 20m tower with six antennas.

      Eastgate House, Newport Road

Replacement of six existing antennas with 18 new antennas on four new 5m poles.

The applications have been made by Cornerstone Telecommunications Infrastructure, which is a joint venture company owned by Vodafone Limited and Telefónica UK, commonly known as O2, who manages a network across the UK for these companies.

In 2020, plans for 24 masts were submitted Cardiff council. The planning committee will now discuss the latest plans at a later date.

Some people claim that there are adverse health effects to living near a 5G mast. But there is no evidence to suggest 5G is dangerous.

Cornerstone addressed the health concerns about 5G masts in a letter to the council. The letter quoted the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Public Health England (PHE).

The WHO was quoted as saying: “A large number of studies have been performed over the last two decades to assess whether mobile phones pose a potential health risk. To date, no adverse health effects have been established as being caused by mobile phone use.”

Similarly, PHE was quoted as saying: “Exposure to radio waves is not new, and health-related research has been conducted on this topic over several decades.

“In particular, a large amount of new scientific evidence has emerged since the year 2000, through dedicated national and international research programmes.”

The UK Government website states: “There is no evidence of a link between 5G and coronavirus (Covid-19).”
